The 1st XV enjoyed an exciting first league outing against a bus traveling Bedford Queens outfit. The first half ended in a close stalemate with both sides seeing a bonus point early on as it finished 27-26 after the forty-minute mark to see Brackley hold onto a narrow lead heading into the second half; but come 80 minutes the war of attrition was won by Brackley seeing them pick up a 5 point win with a scoreline of 62-26 in the end. Tommy Gray was awarded man of the match for his role in the 10 shirt, constantly putting the lads on the front foot with decisive kicking and constant distribution allowing our forward pack to keep the gainline going forward.
A fruitful display from debutant Joe Schafer who came into the pack for the first time after previously playing junior rugby at the club and even as far as colts. Showing great strength in carrying and a crowd boosting and well timed tackle on former Championship scrum half Darryl Veenendaal.
Another mention must go to Jack Briggs again who has joined us in the centers, successfully scoring a brace on league debut and keeping a constant threat in the midfield to allow space wider out for the other backs to exploit.
1st XV Captain Christian Mann had this to say
“Following on from last Saturday's excellent start to the league campaign against Queens, the boys have worked hard in training this week in challenging conditions. We are looking forward to continuing into this weekend in what will be another strong test for us after Rushden & Higham had a top 4 finish last season.
It’s also great to see the club putting out multiple senior side on Saturday, which goes to show the direction we are going as a squad and club and the depth we have within the senior setup”
Unfortunately The Renegades (2nd XV) opposition Daventry 3rd XV were unable to raise a side but Shipston-on-Stour 2nd XV have stepped in at the last minute! We look ahead to this weekend where 2 Brackley teams will be taking the field, 1 away and 1 home. The firsts travel over to Rushden & Higham where they look to continue their momentum from 3 wins on the bounce. A big selection pool this week is really allowing a good contest for shirts. The seconds take on Shipston-on-Stour 2nd XV at Nightingale Close where they will play after the Colts team take on.
Second team captain Will Grantham said
“It’s amazing to see how well the club is doing after a couple tough seasons after COVID, with 2 full teams going out from a senior point of view and fulfilling a colts side is unheard of over the past few years at Brackley. This second team will be vital this year in getting more game time for more players allowing better competition in the first team. Made up of a mixture of vets, second team players all the way to first team players who have a point to prove, it looks to be an exciting day on Saturday!”
Training this week has been intense again, not allowing the pressure to be taken off the squad. Trying to right the wrongs from last weekend and make sure the team can act as one and take chances when they arise.
The teams will be announced after Thursday's training session.
