Brackley suffered last minute heartbreak on Saturday as a late try saw them lose 22-21 at home to Deepings.

The visitors made an excellent start putting Brackley under immediate pressure before scoring a try in the right-hand corner after some quick hands. Deepings were much the better side for most of the half and following a Brackley penalty, scored a second try in the opposite corner to make it 10-3. As half time approached, Brackley started to get on top and after some prolonged pressure on the Deepings try line, eventually scrum half Brad Morgan was able to sneak over to go into the second half 10-8 down.

Brackley used this momentum and were immediately on top but were struggling to finish off their chances. Eventually Brackley’s forward strength showed as prop Luke Andrew powered over from close range. This was followed by a third try when some good hands by the forwards saw replacement flanker Dan Gibb score in the corner.

After Dan Gray had added a second penalty, the hosts were 21-15 up with minutes to go, seemingly on top and looking to get the match clinching bonus point try, despite what had been a low-quality performance. However heartbreakingly, after Deepings had a kick charged down in their own 22, they were able to move the ball wide quickly and put their winger away, who ran the length to score the decisive try under posts, clinching a 22-21 win for the visitors.

It is fair to say everyone knew this was not the type of performance expected of Brackley and the mood in the changings rooms was a sombre one. But the squad need to pick themselves back up quickly and show what they are capable off when they take on Kempston this Saturday in the last match of 2019.
